One international Honors student was recognized for his accomplishments Nov. 14 at the UF International Center’s International Student Achievement Awards ceremony. Melvin Osei Opoku, a 21-year-old biomedical engineering sophomore from Kumasi, Ghana, was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Merit from the College of Engineering.

Osei Opoku is a research assistant in labs regarding brain mapping and genomics; a member of Generational Relief in Prosthetics, a club that designs and produces prosthetics through 3D printing; a teaching assistant for Secrets of Alchemy and Student Government’s director of international student affairs. Awards were distributed based on judgment by UF faculty, administrators, and staff, according to the UF International Center. Osei Opoku was inspired to be around the other award recipients, he said. He was especially motivated by graduate students making impacts in not only Gainesville, but also their home country.

He said, “I felt inspired to pursue even higher dreams … [I hope to] accomplish a similar impact in Ghana and Gainesville.”
