About the 2026-2027 Altruism Learning Community
Many students have a life goal of helping others, but what exactly does that mean? The Altruism Learning Community (ALC) is an application-based experience open to sophomore level and higher honors students, designed to explore the concept of altruism and how it is applied in society.
This year-long academic and experiential-based program provides honors students with a socially engaged space to explore what it means to do good in the world. Students selected for this opportunity work with faculty, peer leaders, as well as campus and community partners to examine altruism at both the global and the local level.
Invited students must commit to the required fall and spring activities outlined below to participate. Optional field trips, retreats, and social gatherings offer additional opportunities to build meaningful connections and support our community throughout the year.
Fall 2026 Course
Complete the 1-credit Honors Altruism Learning Community course and earn 1 Academic Point.
Spring 2027 Practicum
Engage in bi-weekly small group activities and discussions led by peer leaders, and earn 1 Enrichment point. Students will also be participating in local volunteering with community partners.
(Optional) Spring Retreat
Our early spring retreat will be a space to delve into concepts from the class and how they are applied locally.
(Optional) Leadership Opportunities Beyond the First Year
The success of the Honors ALC lies heavily in the contributions of our student leaders. Students who complete the first year requirements are encouraged to apply to serve as peer leaders for future cohorts.
