The Washington Center Internship Program
The Washington Center is a nonprofit educational organization offering internships and academic seminars in Washington, D.C. Students can earn a semester of UF credit by participating in a summer, fall, or spring semester internship. Interns can select their placement from hundreds of organizations and settings. Housing and scholarships are available. The internship provides career training, contacts, and the opportunity to relate academic learning to real-life settings. Students are encouraged to obtain application forms and additional information at the TWC website. To qualify students must have sophomore standing and an overall GPA of at least 3.00.
Steps required to get approval for TWC internships:
- Consult the TWC website for the application form
- Complete the application form but do not make copies of it until the Honors Office has reviewed it
- Applications should be turned in at 29 Tigert Hall and will be reviewed within 24 hours of receipt
- After your application has been approved by the Honors Office, you are approved for the program and can expect to participate in the program and receive financial support from the state of Florida. (See the budget sheet for the amount)
- The Florida financial support is subtracted from your bill. You do not actually get the money paid to you
- You are responsible for sending in the application form and essays (6 copies) and the application fee
Important information regarding participation in TWC internships:
- You are responsible for checking your registration on ISIS BEFORE the start of the semester you are participating in the program. Please confirm on ISIS that you are registered for the correct number of credits. Contact the Honors Office (352-392-1519) immediately, if there is a problem
- You are responsible for paying tuition at UF for the internship credits. If you have the Bright Futures Scholarship, this will pay for tuition in the fall and spring semesters. You will have to pay for summer tuition yourself. Out-of-state students pay the same per credit hour tuition they normally pay at UF
- You will be registered for IDS 4945 credit. This course is graded S/U. Political Science majors should consult with that department for other credit they may be able to earn
- TWC course is considered part of the internship course. You do not earn separate credit for this unless you made arrangements with the Political Science department or another department on campus
- If you decide not to participate in the program, it is your responsibility to notify the Honors Office immediately to make sure you have dropped the IDS credit on ISIS before the end of drop/add for the semester in question
- Credit for IDS 4945 will count toward UF's summer requirement (if applicable) if you participate in a summer semester at TWC
Political Science majors should contact Professor David Hedge in Political Science in Turlington before obtaining Dr. Dickison's signature.
If you will graduate at the end of your internship, near the start of the internship, ask TWC for a form requesting early reporting of their recommended grade.
