The World Through The Performing Arts

Using the over sixty programs that are making up the 2008-2009 University of Florida Performing Arts Season the course will highlight six diverse themes demonstrated within these offerings. The sixteen countries that are represented in the various programs reflect both a historical and a contemporary world culture. Among the performing artists that will be examined for course discussion you will find marquee artists whose names are synonymous with their instrument or their art form. In addition, there are companies that reflect the political environment that our global communities are examining today. Readings appropriate to the various topics being covered will supplement recordings and DVDs of artists followed by discussions to strengthen the in-class settings.
The one-credit hour course will be taught by Dr. Joseph Glover, Interim Dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Provost-Designee of the University of Florida; and, Dr. Michael Blachly, Director of University of Florida Performing Arts. The class will meet in Pugh Hall Room 150 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 4th period (12:30 p.m.)
From Innocence to Hannah Montana: Childhood through the Visual Arts

Harn Museum at UF's Cultural Plaza on Thursdays 3rd and 4th periods
In different historical eras and world cultures, children have been seen in various ways-as tiny members of the workforce, as innocents full of fun and play, as victims of violence, as incipient sexual beings. Five class sessions will focus on these ideas about childhood as reflected in great works of art, using slides and other visual aids as well as orginial works of art from the Harn Museum collection. These class sessions will be held in museum classrooms, galleries and behind the scenes in the art storage area. The sixth class will be devoted to presentations by the class, which will be divided into teams to identify, research and present works of art that relate to the class themes.
This one credit hour course will be taught by Dr. Catherine Emihovich, Dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Rebecca Nagy, Director of the Harn Museum of Art. The class will meet at the Harn Museum at UF's Cultural Plaza on Thursdays from 11 am to 1:45, with a 15 minute break. Students will be expected to attend all six classes and to work with their teams on verbal and visual presentations for the final session.
