Applications are now being accepted for Honors in Paris 2009.

A partnership between the UF's Honors Program and the Paris Research Center offers the opportunity for high achieving students to enroll in challenging, interactive courses, enhanced by excursions, guest speakers, and tours. The curriculum is tailored for high-caliber students who are enthusiastic about living in France, with Paris as your classroom. In addition to intensive studies of Modern French Culture taught by distinguished UF faculty members, students will participate in activities including a week-long trip (location TBA), lectures by esteemed guest speakers, group dinners, wine tasting, concerts, as well as excursions to other areas of France. You will also be able to take advantage of an array of weekly activities designed by native Parisian students to provide an insider's view of Paris for students. Classes are held at the UF Paris Research Center, located in Columbia University's Reid Hall, an innovative center for American academic life in the heart of France.

This program is open to students from all majors; you do not have to speak French to attend. Priority will be given to students in the Honors Program, but all students with a 3.0 GPA or above are encouraged to apply.

This is a UF sponsored UFIC program so the credits you earn will satisfy major, minor and university requirements while living and studying in Paris with top UF professors. Bright Futures scholarships will cover the tuition for the courses in which you are enrolled.

Lancaster, England - Academic Year (October to June)

Click here to view the brochure.

The exchange to Lancaster is not a typical 6 week, summer study program like many at UF. Lancaster is a full academic year program, running from October to June (Michaelmas, Lent and Summer Terms are the equivalent of UF's fall and spring semester). This program is an amazing opportunity to delve deeply into an English culture and also to travel during breaks to surrounding areas of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and even the continent. Unlike summer programs which are often very structured and leave little time for individual exploration of the country and culture, the Lancaster program allows UF students to really become part of the community, both at the University and within the town of Lancaster.

UF students who have gone to Lancaster have very much enjoyed the small campus environment and also the British system of tutorials and seminars, where emphasis is placed on reading widely and writing essays. And whether you are majoring in the College of Liberal Arts and Science or Business, or on a pre-med track, Lancaster University is a great exchange program for you.

For more information visit the Lancaster University website. For a complete list of course offerings click here.

Lancaster lies on the west coast of Britain, roughly equidistant between London and Edinburgh and only 80 miles south of Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Border. The seaside resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe are nearby. Also close at hand are the great urban centers of Liverpool and Manchester (which has the nearest international airport) and the medieval city of York. London is only 3 hours away by high-speed train. Inexpensive student charter buses make the trip to and from London every weekend. Vacation travel to Ireland and to the European continent is also convenient.

If you are interested in applying to Lancaster, visit UF International Center Study Abroad Services in 123 Grinter Hall, 392-5323, ext. 700 or studyabroad@ufic.ufl.edu. For more info. contact the Honors Program in 118 Hume Hall 392-1519, email Regan Garner or see the International Center's Website.

Nicaragua, Central America ? Summer A (May and June)

The UF in Nicaragua program is unique because it seeks to immerse UF students in soci-economic conditions under which two thirds of the world lives, but of which many North Americans have no experience. By providing a safe and enjoyable way to experience life as peasants and people involved in the informal economy of the developing world, the UF in Nicaragua program provides an unparalleled opportunity for the study of grassroots development and Nicaraguan culture. For an intense six weeks students will travel with UF faculty and non-governmental organization staff to a variety of rural and urban communities throughout the country of Nicaragua.

The itinerary consists of mornings involved in participant observation on community development projects, working along side Nicaraguans to better their circumstances. Afternoons are devoted to presentations by local or national community leaders, cultural artists, government officials, or academic scholars. Evenings include time for reflection and journaling as well as socializing with fellow students and Nicaraguans. Weekends will find students enjoying a volcanic lake, a mountain eco-lodge, a cloud-forest, or a Pacific beach. Accomodations include hostels, home stays, and hotels. While accommodations are adequate, conditions can be quite rustic (backpacker style) and students should be prepared for physical challenges as well as cultural ones. Much more detail is available on the program website at www.uf-in-nica.org.

Academically the experience is organized into two different courses, one entitled ?NGOs and Grassroots Development, a Fieldwork Experience? focuses on how Non-governmental organizations interact with government, civil society and commercial sectors of society to foster community development. The program involves working with three different NGOs for two weeks at a time to understand how they operate in the communities where they work, and how they constitute a link in trans-national solidarity between a developing country and industrialized countries. A deeper theoretical orientation to this course can be gotten by taking IDH 3931- 2539 during the preceeding Spring Semester. The other course, entitled ?Nicaraguan Culture? is an exposure to various aspects of Nicaraguan lifeways, including economics, politics, cuisine, music, religion, graphic arts, literature, etc. Each student is encouraged to seek out a particular aspect of Nicaraguan culture to focus on and to write about. Course syllabi are available at www.uf-in-nica.org.

This program is open to students from all majors; you do not have to speak Spanish to attend, but Spanish language training would be advantageous. Priority will be given to honors students, but any students with a 3.0 GPA or above are encouraged to apply.

This is a UF sponsored UFIC program so the credits you earn will satisfy major, minor and university requirements while living and studying in Nicaragua with UF professors. For more information contact the program director, Tim Fogarty, or Suzanne Hill of the UF International Center.
