The Student Honors Organization promotes community among all honors students, provides opportunities for honors students to reach out to those in need, and facilitates involvement in cultural and educational opportunities, both on campus and in the Gainesville area.
Membership Policy
All University of Florida honors students (including those not living in Hume Hall) become members of the Student Honors Organization (SHO) when they arrive at Preview. The SHO Constitution can be accessed by clicking here.
Student Leadership
The Student Honors Organization has 6 student officers, 26 students in programming committees. Visit the Officers and Board Members page for more details.
The Academic Committee brings activities and events at the intellectual and cultural level to Honors students. The committee draws students together to learn from each other and facilitate scholarship. Some regular events are the Honors Scholars Series, which brings in professors to speak to their areas of expertise, Open Mic Nights, where students can perform their own music, songs, or poetry and listen to others, and the Honors Book Club, which meets monthly over coffee.
The Community Service Committee coordinates service opportunities across campus and throughout the Gainesville area. The committee offers programs that allow SHO members to reach out and volunteer. Some service projects include fashion shows for local retirement homes, Penny Wars fundraising, and Habitat for Humanity builds.
The Residential Committee presides over the Column Cup, promoting an ongoing series of competitive events between the four communities of Hume. Residential Committee members are required to live in Hume and, thus, may also hold voting seats in the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA) if interested.
The Social Committee organizes events to establish a sense of community in SHO. The committee strives to plan creative, fun ways for Honors students to interact. Throughout the year, they plan events such as Sundaes on Sunday, the Spring Formal, and Casino Nights.
