Internships are an important step toward finding a great job after graduation. Internships allow you to test your interest in specific career areas, learn new skills and make contacts that can help you find a professional position after graduation. The Honors Program offers IDH credit (usually fulfills elective requirements) to students from all departments wishing to pursue an internship.
NOTE: You do not need to be an honors student to apply for internship credit through the Honors Program.

Internship Credit - IDH 4940
An internship is different than a part-time job. To get credit, your experience must meet some basic criteria. Primarily, you should have a deliberate learning agenda. In other words, you need a good idea of what you specifically hope to learn and how it is applicable to your major or your future goals. Your training or service experience must be supervised and help you meet your specific learning goals.
Grading is S/U and based on the completion of a paper at the end of the internship and a letter of support from your supervisor. A course taken for S/U does not normally apply to major requirements, but you may use these hours for elective credit. Your college may offer a similar internship program that can count for credit as well.
The Honors Program offers credit for internships through IDH 4940. Students from any department may submit an application for consideration, but students in the College of Journalism are required to present a letter from an academic advisor or department chair with their application. You need not be an honors student, but you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be approved for Honors internship credit.

This course is designed to introduce freshman and first semester sophomores to the process of finding and securing an internship. The course will focus on campus involvement, leadership skills, communication skills, intermediate resume writing, and search strategies.
The most valuable factor in obtaining an internship is a strong understanding of the process and its many facets. Through this course, students will gain a greater understanding of the level of competitiveness involved in certain programs, the application process, and what interviewers are looking for.

Advanced Researching Internships

This course is intended specifically for juniors (and in extraordinary cases, sophomores) who already have an interest in gaining an internship with a particular company, or at the very least have a resume that reflects the general qualities demanded by a particular industry. The course will focus on strong resume and cover letter writing, as well as in depth interviewing skills. IDH 4905 (Introduction to Research Internships) is not a prerequisite for IDH 4905 (Advanced Researching Internships).
