JMU-UCC REU Program - Summer 2007
Projects
For the 2007 program students will continue with projects that were carried out during the summer 2006 program. They included:
- Effect of salinity on filtration of the West African mangrove oyster, Crassastrea tulipa
- Isolation of chemical compounds from the leaves of Cryprtolepis sanguinolenta
- Effect of extracts of Piper guineense seeds on insect pest damage of cowpea plants
- Isolation and comparison of alkaloids from Sienna siamea
- Oviposition preference and larval performance of Hypolimnas misippus on different host-plant species
- Nesting and foraging habits of stingless bee, Dactylurina staundingerii
- Length-weight relationship, food habits and salinity tolerance of the mudskipper, Periophthalmus barbarus, from the Kakum River estuary
In addition to continuing with these projects, students would also have an opportunity to carry out research on the following topics:
- Screening traditional pest management controls
- Phytochemical screening of medicinal plants
- Pollination and spider ecology
Students will develop with their projects in collaboration with their faculty mentors. The Program Director will assign projects to students upon consultation with the faculty mentors.
