JMU-UCC REU Program - Summer 2006

Welcome

The JMU-UCC Summer Research program continues to focus on providing a rare opportunity for a select group of students who are interested in doing scientific research in a foreign country to do so. A major goal of the program is to provide students with a research experience towards making them globally engaged citizens. Participants acquire a wealth of experience that should serve them well beyond their undergraduate education . The 2006 Summer program took place from June through August 2006 at the University of Cape Coast after an orientation exercise at James Madison University. This year's group of students were selected from over 110 applicants. They came from a variety of institutions ranging from small liberal arts colleges to large research universities. They completed their assigned projects and presented their results at UCC before we returned to the US. They are expected to present their work at regional and national meetings. Also, they will publish their work in peer-reviewed journals shortly.

On this website, you will find the stories of each student and how the program has impacted him/her. One of the new activities that took place this year was a trip that some of the students made to the Mole Game Reserve in northern Ghana. Photographs from that trip are available at the gallery.

Next year's program will take place from May through July 2007. Applications will be available after December 2006 at this website.
