JMU-UCC REU Program - Summer 2005

Welcome

Producing a scientific and technological workforce with international experience is essential for the continued leadership of the United States in global affairs. Often, undergraduates in science, mathematics, engineering and technology do not have easy access to activities that expose them to other cultures. The primary goal of this program is to provide opportunities to motivated undergraduates to carry out carefully selected research projects in sub-Sahara Africa and to extend the educational experiences at the global level. The students will be immersed in the Ghanaian culture and it would provide them a meaningful experience in a stable West African country with an enormous selection of flora and fauna. Each year, a high school teacher will be selected to participate in the program.

During the summer of 2005, students from six US universities traveled to Ghana to conduct research at the University of Cape Coast. Each student was supervised by a faculty member at the host institution. Projects that were carried out ranged from ecological studies on butterflies to extraction of active ingredients from herbs.

The JMU-UCC REU Program is funded by the National Science Foundation. NSF provides funds to cover the airfare to and from Ghana, local transportation within Ghana, accommodation, meals and research supplies for students who are selected to participate in the program. Students also receive a stipend upon completion of the program. Participants have to provide evidence of travel insurance and they have to cover personal expenses such as gifts, souvenirs and other miscellaneous costs.

This website provides information about the program during the summer of 2005. The program will be run in the summer of 2006 and the exact dates will be available at this website soon.
