(Un)common Reading Program
Each semester, the Honors Program offers a selection of one-credit courses based on a single book. Past examples include War and Peace, The Inferno, Democracy in America, and Alice in Sunderland (a graphic novel). Books from any genre are allowed (fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, etc.) and instructors are encouraged to be daring in their choices. No salary is offered for teaching these courses, but the Honors Program does offer $1,000 in professional development funds (to be used for travel, materials, etc.). Proposals may be sent to the director, Dr. Kevin Knudson at email@example.com.
Deadlines: January 15 for Fall Semester courses; September 15 for Spring Semester courses
Honors Investigation Teams (HITs)
This pilot project launched in Spring 2013. Honors Investigation Teams are small groups of students (limited to 15) who work with faculty to study and seek original solutions to technological or social problems. These projects must have a strong experiential learning component. The goal is for students to work in an interdisciplinary project-based environment to engage in learning and community involvement. Students will apply to participate in a HIT and will enroll in a 3-credit section of IDH 3931 associated to the project.
Project guidelines: Faculty who wish to submit proposals for HITs should keep the following in mind. At least two faculty members from two different academic units are required as leaders of each HIT. We seek to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among students and faculty. The proposed project should contain an outreach or experiential learning component. There is no restriction on subject area; however, there is a preference for projects that address current issues of societal importance. Proposals for HITs should contain a brief outline of the project, its goals and student learning outcomes, examples of engaged learning activities, and proposed evaluation methods of the results.
Compensation: A total of $10,000 is allocated for each HIT, to be shared by the faculty members' departments. Some funds are available to support course activities; these will be negotiated after proposals are selected.
Deadlines: Proposals should be sent via email to Dr. Knudson at firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday, September 26, 2014. One HIT will be funded in Spring 2015.
