The Rhodes Scholarship
Graduate Study
Study at Oxford. Open to all fields of study in fine arts, liberal arts & sciences and some business and engineering. Students apply during the senior year for 2 years of study at Oxford. Applicants must be single and under age 24. Competition includes written essay, campus, state and regional interviews. Only 32 awarded, 4 from the southern area.

The Marshall Scholarship
Graduate Study
Study in the United Kingdom. Open to all fields of study in fine arts, arts and humanities, social sciences, sciences, business and engineering. Available subjects vary according to the university. Competition includes essay, campus, and district interviews. Students must be under age 26, preferably single. Only 40 awarded nationally but 5 must come from the southern area. Both graduating seniors and current graduate students are encouraged to apply through UF.

George J. Mitchell Scholarship
Graduate Study
Named in honor of the former Senator's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, these Scholarships will allow American post-graduates to pursue one year of study at institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Scholarship will be awarded to students who have shown both academic distinction and the potential for leadership. There are no restrictions as to academic field of study. Scholars will be selected in the Fall and will begin their studies in the following Fall. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for an interview.

The U.S. Fulbright Student Program
Graduate Study
The U.S. Fulbright or graduating seniors who want to spend a year conducting research or teaching English in another country before beginning their graduate career, as well as for graduate student MA or Ph.D. research. Some countries require fluency in the language of the country and may require a plan of study through a university there. Fulbright awards pay travel, tuition and a monthly stipend.

Churchill Scholarship
Graduate Study
The Churchill Scholarship covers all University and College tuition and fees. In addition, students receive a living allowance of £11,000 if enrolled in a nine-month academic program and £13,000 if enrolled in a full-year academic program. They also receive a Special Travel Award for travel to and from the United Kingdom, and the Foundation reimburses visa fees. Fourteen scholarships are awarded annually

Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Undergraduate and Graduate Study
The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are available for graduate study or for study for a second Bachelor's degree at the University of Cambridge, England. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others. The award covers the full cost of study at Cambridge, all approved University and College tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, a discretionary allowance for study-related activities, and one return economy airfare between the UK and the Scholar's normal country of residence.

DAAD German Academic Exchange Scholarship
Undergraduate Study
The DAAD undergraduate scholarship is designed to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities with extremely generous funding packages. German language ability is not a requirement for the grant, but successful applicants should have the language skills that will be necessary in order to complete their study/research goals. First-Year students are not eligible. According to the program, the success rate for applicants has been 20-30% in recent years.

Gilman International Scholarship Program
Undergraduate Study
The Gilman Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. One goal of the Gilman program is to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations such as the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America. The program aims to support students who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.To be eligible, students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Boren Awards for International Study
Undergraduate and Graduate Study
Boren Scholars and Fellows study throughout the world, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a variety of academic and professional disciplines, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants identify how their study abroad programs or overseas projects, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

Scholarships can be for 3 months, 6 months or the academic year. The latter includes the prestigious Peace and Conflict Resolution Scholarship ($50,000 over two years at one of seven major institutions in the world). Awardees must study in a country other than their own. Countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Eastern Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa are likely to yield a scholarship. Applicants will need to contact a club between now and early March, as the deadline for submission of complete application materials and approval by the club is late March. Professor Gerry Isaacs is the Coordinator for Alachua and Marion counties, some 14 Rotary clubs.
